My wife and I are moving. For the seventh time. To be even closer to our family. Mainly so they can take care of us when we are feeble. Well, more feeble than we are right now. ( I hope they are reading this.)
The move is only 45 minutes from our current home. This time it will be to a 55+ HOA community where we can commiserate with people who have similar age-related problems. And get our lawn mowed.
All this moving got me thinking, ‘Where is my real home?’
Paul wrote that our citizenship is with God. “For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come” (Hebrews 13:14, NLT). That’s good news. Birthright citizenship is an issue right now. But ours is taken care of. The Supreme Court of God has ruled that nothing can take that away. . . no emperor or current leader.
And consider these words:
‘.. we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands.’ (2Cor. 5:1 NLT)
But Jesus says it best. It was after the last supper when Jesus presented some unsettling news to his disciples about the days ahead. And they began to wonder what was coming next as Jesus told them he was leaving.
To calm their fears, he said, ‘Don’t let this rattle you. You trust God, don’t you? Trust me. There is plenty of room for you in my Father’s home. If that weren’t so, would I have told you that I’m on my way to get a room ready for you? And if I’m on my way to get your room ready, I’ll come back and get you so you can live where I live. And you already know the road I’m taking.” (John 14 MSG)
So yes, our life will be frantic in the next few days. So will much of life for many people. But we’ll get through it by the grace of God.
I don’t know how it all unfolds, but I’m sticking with Jesus. He knows the way. And, in fact, he is the way.
